Get out the 'Palomitas': Its Movie Time with the Gazpachomonk

A compilation of the free movies that are doing the rounds right now featuring some of the greatest names and arts in Spanish history...

Flamenco at 5:15 by Cynthia Scott, National Film Board of Canada

Bethune by Donald Brittain, National Film Board of Canada

Homage to Catalonia II

A documentary, a research project, a story of stories about the construction of a sustainable, solidary and decentralized economy. Weaving nets that overcome the individualization and the hierarchical division of work. Thousands of people every day all over the world. Here and now.

"Homage to Catalonia II" is a tool for research. Not a finished, conclusive and closed work, but a work in progress. We want this documentary to be open to everybody, in and out of the university realm, that's why it has a Creative Commons license.

Destino: Dalí and Disney Collaboration

57 years in the making, this collaborative project was begun in 1946 when Dalí co-scripted this 6 minute film with John Hench. The film got shelved due to financing problems until 1999 when Disney's nephew rediscovered the project and with the help of a new crew of animators brought it alive in 2003.

It would later be nominated for an oscar for best short animated film.

Flamenco at 5:15

"This Oscar®-winning short film is an impressionistic record of a flamenco dance class given to senior students of the National Ballet School of Canada by two great teachers from Spain, Susana and Antonio Robledo. The film shows the beautiful young North American dancers--inspired by the flamenco rhythms and mesmerized by Susana's extraordinary energy--joyously merging with an ancient gypsy culture."

Picasso Painting on Glass

In 1950 Belgian film-maker Paul Haesaerts filmed "A Visit with Picasso". This short scene is an outake from the film showing Picasso painting on glass, with the camera filming from the other side.

The entire film by Paul Haesaerts can be seen on vimeo or by following this link.

Hemingway: Spanish Earth

Spanish Earth was shot by Hemingway in 1937 - he had come to report on the civil war, but ended up making this film to support and raise funds for the Republican Government. He was a member of the Contemporary Historians with John Dos Pasos, and shot the film focusing on a small town to the south of Madrid.
The full story of the controversial making of the film including Orson Wells participation -  and later rejection - can be found on the excellent Open Culture site.

Norman Bethune

Canadian documentary on Norman Bethune the man who came to rescue a city in Exodus. The story of the Ambulance man and the Spanish Civil War.
